Page 135 · The thirsting settlement

Late afternoon. The trio enters the settlement from the nearly empty riverbed. Stopped waterwheels, dry channels, empty troughs and wilting fields surround an orderly water-ration line. Caelan silently notices a child receiving half a cup. His right thigh remains bandaged.

CHAPTER 8. THE RIVER THAT STOPPED.

Page 136 · The waterkeeper

Maren Dell approaches the travelers with her wooden measuring rod. She has short dark wavy hair, a sturdy build, rolled work sleeves and a practical apron. The weary residents continue rationing water.

Maren: If you are looking for the river, so are we. Elara: How long? Maren: Two mornings.

Page 137 · Two mornings

Maren leads the group to the silent mill channel. The river flowed normally two sunsets earlier; a vibration was felt during the night and by morning the channel had become a trickle. No one built a dam or saw tampering. The remaining well is also dropping.

Maren: It was running at sunset. That night, the ground shook. By morning, a trickle. Elara: No new dam? No one working upstream? Maren: No. Nothing built. And the well is dropping.

Page 138 · Fresh marks

Elara studies recent waterlines, damp sediment and the tracks of thirsty animals heading east. There are no tool marks, boot tracks or human barricades. Sylphina feels deep pressure through her staff. Caelan receives a single impression.

Whisper Sense: FALLING.

Page 139 · The well will not wait

Maren points out the upstream service trail and remains to manage rationing. Elara questions whether Caelan should come with his painful right leg. The three head into the nearly dry channel before sunset.

Maren: An old service trail follows the river upstream. Elara: You can barely walk. Caelan: I can walk badly. Elara: That is not the defense you think it is. Sylphina: The well will not wait for us to finish arguing.

Page 140 · Upstream

The trio follows remaining moisture upstream and west between steep wooded banks. The settlement lies downstream behind them. Caelan moves slowly with his spear, protecting his injured right thigh.

Silent travel.

Page 141 · Raised riverbed

Fresh fractures, exposed roots and leaning trees surround a newly lifted section of the riverbed. Mud lies above the old waterline. The travelers hear water beyond the rise but cannot yet see the full obstruction.

Water sounds beyond the rise.

Page 142 · Where the water went

A colossal diseased root has lifted stone and soil into a natural barrier. Water pools upstream on the right while most of it pours into a deep fissure beyond the root. The original riverbed remains dry downstream on the left. The root is damaged, stationary and partly hollow.

Silent environment reveal.

Page 143 · Down

The travelers study the upper pool, root-and-stone barrier, underground fissure and dry channel. An old stone spillway curves around the near side, controlled by a closed wooden sluice gate.

Elara: The river did not stop. Caelan: It changed direction. Sylphina: Down.

Page 144 · A smaller way through

Caelan touches an exposed root. Fragmented pressure and emptiness overwhelm him without explaining the wider decay. Sylphina warns that forcing the main channel open could send a destructive surge downstream. Elara identifies the old spillway as a possible controlled bypass.

Whisper Sense: PRESSURE. SPLIT. DROWNING. EMPTY BELOW. Sylphina: Break the barrier and the whole pool goes downstream. We cannot close that fissure. Elara: Then we use the spillway. A little at a time.

Page 145 · The old spillway

The trio inspects and clears the beginning of the spillway. Mud, stones and branches obstruct it. The gate remains jammed by water pressure and a swollen wooden pin. Elara plans a rope-assisted partial opening, leaving the main barrier intact.

Elara: Clear the channel first. Elara: Rope on the lifting beam. We open it partway.

Page 146 · Ready at the gate

Elara takes one arrow from her seven and stands on a stable ledge with a clear view of the locking pin. Caelan rigs the travel rope over the fixed crossbar to the lifting beam and braces behind the retaining wall. Sylphina waits beside living plants near the entrance.

Elara: When the pin goes, be ready.

Page 147 · The locking pin

Elara fires one precise arrow into the swollen pin. The pin splits and the arrow breaks beyond reuse, leaving six usable arrows. The gate jerks upward under the rope’s pull, and water surges through the narrow gap toward the downstream spillway.

Sound: TAK. One arrow is fired and broken; six usable arrows remain.

Page 148 · The first surge

The water carries branches, stones and mud toward Caelan. His injured right leg slips as he holds tension on the rope. Sylphina encourages living reeds, vines and small roots to form a rough debris screen that redirects the largest branches without stopping the flow.

Rushing water and breaking debris.

Page 149 · A moment to move

Part of the old retaining wall collapses toward Caelan. One brief Echo Ward through surviving roots turns the largest stones long enough for him to roll clear while retaining the rope. The imperfect defense exhausts him and strains his old thigh wound.

A brief defensive response from nearby living roots.

Page 150 · A controlled stream

Elara moves down from her ledge to help Caelan pull. Sylphina holds the living screen clear of the spillway. Together they raise the gate a little farther and secure it with a wedge. A narrow steady stream flows downstream, while most of the upper pool still drains into the fissure.

The bypass flows. The damaged river remains unrepaired.

Page 151 · Water reaches home

After recovering their rope and weapons, the travelers follow the narrow stream downstream. Water darkens stones, enters an old irrigation channel and collects in a trough. A waterwheel shifts only slightly. Maren directs residents to fill containers with quiet urgency.

Quiet relief as the water returns.

Page 152 · Enough for a cup

Maren measures the limited flow. It can support drinking water and some crops under strict rationing, but cannot restore the mills or the full river.

Maren: It will not fill the river. Sylphina: No. But it will fill a cup. Maren: For now, that is enough.

Page 153 · The next crossing

At night in the settlement, Caelan’s right-thigh wound is cleaned and given an ordinary fresh bandage. The party receives filled waterskins, modest food and a few clean bandages. Elara retains six arrows and the full-length damp rope. Maren shows the old route toward a long-unused Rootbridge and warns of recent ground movement.

Maren: The old road crosses the Rootbridge. No one here has crossed it in years. The ground may have weakened it.

Page 154 · A temporary kindness

Early morning. The three leave westward with worn equipment, modest provisions and continued fatigue. Caelan limps on his freshly bandaged right leg. Elara carries six arrows, her map and damp full-length rope. Behind them, strict rationing continues beside the narrow temporary stream. A worn root-carved marker points toward the highlands.

Silent chapter ending.
