Page 61 · Enough to carry
At the Ancient Glade's mossy stone, the trio lays out food parcels, three waterskins, a small cooking pot, bowls and blankets. Elara measures their supplies and catches Caelan reaching toward the food.
CHAPTER 4. THREE INTO THE WILD. Elara: Three days of food. For all three of us. Caelan: I wasn't taking any. Elara: Your hand was.
Page 62 · Ten good arrows
Caelan checks the intact Rootfang Spear and its bindings. Elara counts ten arrows, returns them to her quiver and packs her supplies. They prepare modest bags and rolled blankets for the journey.
Elara: Ten. Caelan: Only ten? Elara: Ten that fly straight.
Page 63 · A place to begin
Caelan prepares their three waterskins beside flowing water. Sylphina packs herbs, medicine, clean cloth and old texts. A local trail map gives them a first destination: the Scrying Mirror Pool.
Elara: Where do we start? Sylphina: The Scrying Mirror Pool. Caelan: Will it show us the spring? Sylphina: It may give us a direction.
Page 64 · Leaving the Glade
Sylphina says a quiet goodbye to the animals by the pool. Elara leads the fully supplied party onto the trail, with Caelan in the middle and Sylphina following. The fox and birds stay behind.
Sylphina: Mind the place for me. Caelan: You were talking to the fox? Sylphina: Mostly.
Page 65 · Across the water
The trio crosses a shallow woodland stream on stepping stones. Elara reaches the far bank first. Caelan wets a boot at the edge of a stone before the travelers continue together.
Caelan: That stone moved. Elara: Of course it did.
Page 66 · Old paths
An old forest path passes a small abandoned shrine and peaceful wildlife. Roots across the trail remind Caelan of the unexpected foothold during the deer fight. He tells Elara and Sylphina what happened.
Caelan: During the deer fight... a root rose under my foot. Elara: You never mentioned that. Caelan: I thought I'd imagined it.
Page 67 · A question on the road
Elara asks Sylphina about Caelan's connection to the forest while they walk. Sylphina denies choosing him. A silent view of the living woodland separates her two replies.
Elara: Why Caelan? Did you choose him? Sylphina: I did not choose him. Sylphina: The forest did.
Page 68 · Keep walking
Caelan answers with uneasy sarcasm. Elara smiles, and the three continue along a wooded ridge as the afternoon light lowers. Their path toward the Scrying Mirror Pool remains ahead.
Caelan: I was happier before you finished that sentence.
Page 69 · A dry place
At sunset, Elara chooses a dry ridge clearing beside a small rill. They gather dead sticks, unroll three bedrolls, set their weapons safely beside their sleeping places and light a modest central fire.
Elara: We stop here. Caelan: I was hoping you'd say that.
Page 70 · Centuries ago
The companions open one food parcel each and share simple soup and flatbread around the fire. Caelan asks about Sylphina's younger years, earning a gently evasive answer.
Caelan: What were you like a few centuries ago? Sylphina: Much less sensible. Caelan: What changed? Sylphina: I learned to look sensible.
Page 71 · Small repairs
Elara quietly stitches the strap of her closed belt pouch. Caelan rubs his scratched left cheek. Sylphina notices and takes ordinary medicine and a clean cloth from her satchel.
Sylphina: You've been rubbing that all afternoon. Caelan: It barely hurts. Elara: Then stop poking it. Sylphina: Let me see.
Page 72 · Ordinary kindness
Sylphina gently cleans Caelan's left-cheek scratches and applies salve. The wound remains visible and uncovered. Elara finishes her repair as the travelers settle beside the fire with growing trust.
Sylphina: There. Try leaving it alone. Caelan: Thanks.
Page 73 · The waking root
Later that night, Elara and Sylphina sleep beside the glowing embers. Caelan wakes in his bedroll near the oak and pushes his blanket aside. A fragmented impression rises through the nearby roots.
Whisper Sense impression: FIRST...
Page 74 · At his fingertips
Caelan kneels beside his bed and touches the soil over an existing root with his left hand. The impressions grow stronger, arriving as isolated words without an explanation. His companions remain asleep.
Whisper Sense impressions: WATER... ROOT...
Page 75 · Water between roots
A fleeting abstract impression fills the page: luminous water moves between enormous living roots in an undefined depth. There are no directions, labels or explanation.
Silent full-page impression.
Page 76 · Beyond the trees
The impression vanishes, leaving ordinary soil beneath Caelan's hand. His companions still sleep. A few paces from camp, he stands at the ridge opening and looks toward the immense World Center Tree across the moonlit valley.
Silent page.
