Page 99 · The weight they carry

Late-afternoon light falls through the forest as the trio continues from Briarback's clearing. Elara remains watchful, with seven arrows in her depleted quiver. Sylphina grips her staff in silence. Caelan stumbles on his injured right leg and braces with his spear.

CHAPTER 6. THE MIRROR POOL. Silent travel.

Page 100 · Walking, poorly

Elara stops the group. Caelan sits on a dry trail rock and puts his spear beside him. After setting down her bow, Elara checks and adjusts the existing bandage on his right thigh. Sylphina waits nearby. His injury and torn trousers remain.

Caelan: I can keep walking. Elara: You are walking. Poorly.

Page 101 · Knowing

Caelan looks toward Sylphina as Elara finishes checking his bandage. He offers reassurance about Briarback. Sylphina pauses, her hand still tight around the Ironwood Scepter, before admitting the weight of what she felt.

Caelan: You did what you could. Sylphina: I know. A silent pause. Sylphina: Knowing does not make it lighter.

Page 102 · Water ahead

The travelers hear water ahead. Caelan rises carefully and takes his spear; Elara retrieves her bow. They continue with their packs toward healthier flowers and a glimmer of water through the trees.

Silent page.

Page 103 · The Mirror Glade

Damaged woodland gives way to an ancient circular glade. Elara checks the animal tracks and perimeter before signaling that it is clear. Caelan and Sylphina wait at a broken stone arch. Sylphina names the pool.

Sylphina: The Scrying Mirror Pool.

Page 104 · Still water — left page

The left-hand page begins a two-page view of the Mirror Glade, extending across calm reflective water toward ancient roots, flowers and worn stones along the western bank. The place is beautiful, quiet and safe for the moment.

Silent environment spread. Read page 104 on the left, then page 105 on the right.

Page 105 · Still water — right page

The right-hand page completes the Mirror Glade panorama. The travelers stand small near its broken entrance arch. Enormous roots, weathered druidic stones, mossy ruins and pale flowers surround a perfectly still pool reflecting evening sky beneath the canopy.

Silent continuation of the environment spread.

Page 106 · More mirrors

Caelan and Elara exchange a quiet joke while looking over the pool. Sylphina identifies the water itself as the mirror. They place their travel loads beside a western bench. Sylphina walks around the eastern bank toward the root arch, Elara moves west and Caelan approaches the near southern ledge.

Caelan: I expected more mirrors. Elara: Try not to sound disappointed. Sylphina: The water is the mirror.

Page 107 · What roots remember

Caelan kneels at the near southern edge while Sylphina stands across the water with her scepter planted beside intersecting roots. Elara watches from the western bank on the left. Caelan lays his spear within reach on dry stone to his right. Sylphina explains the pool's limits.

Sylphina: It cannot show us what will happen. Sylphina: Only what the roots remember.

Page 108 · Inward

Favoring his bandaged right thigh, Caelan braces his left hand on dry stone and touches the pool with his right fingertips. Ripples move inward. Sylphina steadies the surrounding roots with her planted scepter. The reflected sky fades into water and light.

Silent page.

Page 109 · Natural impressions

Six fragmented natural memories evoke freezing water, high mountain air, narrow waterfalls, smooth pale stone, sunlight through mist and water moving through huge healthy roots. No people, words or map explain the images.

Silent sensory sequence.

Page 110 · The valley remembered

A secluded highland valley appears in memory. Two distinctive split mountain peaks rise above three narrow waterfalls joining a clear spring within smooth pale stone. Below the water, healthy living roots carry it away underground. The memory does not locate the valley in the present.

Silent memory reveal.

Page 111 · Too deep

The remembered roots become diseased, with violet-grey gas moving through cracks beneath them. At the pool, pain flares in Caelan's existing right-thigh wound and the surface becomes turbulent. Sylphina withdraws her staff from the northern root crossing to break the connection and turns toward the western bank.

Silent page.

Page 112 · Back from the water

Sylphina rounds the western bank past Elara, places her staff against a stone and takes Caelan's left upper arm and cloak shoulder. She pulls him backward onto the dry southern bank. His right hand leaves the water, his thigh bandage stays intact and the pool becomes still again.

Silent rescue sequence.

Page 113 · The skyline

Seated on the bank, Caelan catches his breath and protests the interrupted vision. Sylphina warns how deeply he followed the memory. Elara recognizes the western mountain skyline, but she does not know the valley.

Caelan: I almost had it. Sylphina: You nearly followed the memory too deeply. Elara: Those mountains are west of here. Caelan: You know them? Elara: I know the skyline. Not the valley.

Page 114 · A direction

Sylphina carefully distinguishes the remembered spring from proof that it still exists. Elara opens their local map and the group identifies the old western road toward the highlands. Their clue provides a direction, without revealing the valley's location or the cause of the decay.

Caelan: So it exists? Sylphina: It existed when the roots remembered it. Elara: That is not the same thing. Sylphina: No. Sylphina: But it is a direction.

Page 115 · Sheltered fire

With night approaching, the travelers camp on clear gravel beyond a western ruin wall, safely away from the pool and roots. Elara prepares the route. Sylphina studies the still water before returning to the sheltered fire. Caelan rests his bandaged leg. They eat modestly from existing supplies.

Silent camp sequence.

Page 116 · West at dawn

Early morning. The three pack their supplies, reclaim their weapons and leave the extinguished camp along the western trail. Caelan remains bandaged and careful; Elara's quiver still holds seven arrows. In the foreground the Mirror Pool reflects the distant World Center Tree. A faint violet-grey trace passes through one submerged root beneath the reflection.

Silent chapter ending.
